Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteL. Howard Newman, the son of Navy officer William D. Newman, also became a Navy officer and served on several ships during the Civil War along with his brother William Bogert Newman. After the Civil War, Newman continued to command the USS Nyack as a gunboat to the South Pacific Squadron until dying in the Spanish bombardment of Valparaiso on March 31, 1866. Scope and ContentThis collection contains the ships log of Union Army Lieutenant Commander L. Howard Newman from May 10,1863 to April 4, 1865 as he commanded the USS Dawn, USS Pembina, and USS Nyack in both the North and South Atlantic Blockading Squadrons. In it he discusses the deaths and desertions of crewmembers; movements of ships through the Potomac Flotilla off Port Royal, South Carolina; a shipwreck; and attacks on Fort Fisher and Fort Anderson on the Cape Fear River.
