Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJoseph P. Ruth was born in Denver, Colorado in 1894 and became a self-employed engineer under the name of the Ruth Locomotive Company. In the early 1930s, he invented and patented a mechanism that removed the toxic gases from diesel engine exhaust, allowing the engines to be used in mining and other undergound operations. Rufus K. Reaves was a merchant in Athens and Northeast Georgia. He owned land and the Reaves Gold Mine in Rabun County, Georgia and served as mayor of Athens from 1887-1888.
