Historical Note

Homer C. Jarrett was the African-American son of Julia Jarrett, born a slave, from Shiloh, Harris County, Georgia. Homer moved north, seeking a better life and settling in Boston, Massachusetts. He held various jobs, including selling life insurance to African-Americans and eventually starting his own real estate business in Boston.

Scope and Content

Consists of letters to and from Homer Jarrett and family. Includes letters written to and from Pearl Doris Reed, of Indianapolis, Indiana, who was the grandmother of Atlanta writer, Pearl Cleage. Also includes various letters to and from his mother, Julia Jarrett, who was born a slave. Julia details her life on a farm as well as violence that affected her family and friends in the Jim Crow era of the South.
