Abbott was born November 20, 1838 in Tuckaohe, New Jersey and served as a sergeant with the 48th New York Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army in the Civil War through the 1862 seige of Fort Pulaski, and was fatally wounded in the assault on Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina in 1863.
