Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteGeorgia native Jack Landrum enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and trained as a medical corpsman before assignment to sea duty on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Antietam. He served in the Pacific Theatre before hostilities with Japan ended in 1945, received honorable discharge, and returned to Georgia where he enrolled at Mercer University. Shortly after being discharged from wartime active military duty, he joined the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving as a Lieutenant and ultimately attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He wrote an account of his memoirs of service in the Navy as an enlisted man and as a reserve officer entitled "Memories of Service in the United States Navy," which he finished in 2013. Scope and ContentThe collection consists primarily of documents created during Jack Landrum's service in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Naval Reserve. These documents include forms, orders, certificates, and other related material. Also included is a manuscript of "Memories of Service in the United States Navy," a memoir about his career in the military. Also included are photographs of Mr. Landrum, his wife, and several U.S. Navy groups, newsletters, and certificates.
