Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteAlexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883) was a lawyer, politician, vice president of the Confederate States of America, and Georgia governor. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, two are antebellum letters written while Stephens was a U. S. Congressman representing Georgia's 7th District. The first letter was written from Washington, February 10, 1850, requesting a copy of The Daily Globe be sent to a constituent. The second letter asks a "Dr. Lee" in Washington to perform editing services for an agricultural report. The eight postwar letters are written as a private citizen in Milledgeville and Crawfordville.
