Brown enlisted as a private in the First Regiment of Georgia State Troops, or the Georgia State Line, on Christmas Day 1863, at Allatoona, Georgia, in the command of Colonel E. N. Galt. The primary function of the troops was to guard bridges, railroads, and military depots. They participated in the Battle of Atlanta as combat troops.
