Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteAdmiral James Lardner commanded the East Coast Blockading Squadron during the Civil War, from June 4-December 8, 1862. This squadron was a minor command of the Union Blockade, based in Key West and assigned to the Florida coast from east of Pensacola to Cape Canaveral. Scope and ContentThe collection consists primarily of correspondence and documents relating to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron under the command of Admiral James Lardner (1802-1881). Included are detailed orders for the USS Stars and Stripes, a roster of ships in the Squadron on November 30, 1862, and printed General Orders by the Secretary of the Navy drumming Commander George Henry Preble, nephew of the admiral, out of the service for allowing the CSS Florida to run into Mobile, Alabama.
