Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteCharles Jefferson Hooper (b. 1806) and Jane Byrd Word (b. 1813) married on June 14, 1832. Their son Charles Word Hooper (1843-1919) served as a Confederate private of Company E, 5th Georgia Regiment and their daughter Sarah Jane (Jennie) Hooper (b. 1838) married Dr. Edward A. O. Ware (1833-1866) in 1859. In 1865, Dr. Ware and his wife fled to Texas. Scope and ContentThis collection includes correspondence between Edward A. O. Ware and his family while he was in medical school; letters between Sarah Jane Hooper Ware, her mother Jane Byrd Word Hooper, and other family members during the war and concerning the Ware's trek to Texas at the close of the Civil War; Sarah Jane Hooper's diploma from Cassville Female College; three photographs of Charles W. Hooper and his discharge from Georgia 8th Regiment; and two slave auction receipts issued to Edward A. O. Ware.
