Alfred Howe Terry (1827-1890), a Union general from Connecticut, was appointed the last military governor of the Third Military District on December 22, 1869.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of three handwritten letters: dated Atlanta, December 28, 1869, addressed to General Ruger, McPherson Barracks, signed "A. H. Terry," regarding the examination of a policeman who killed a black man at the barracks; dated Atlanta, Georgia, December 29, addressed to General Ruger, signed "Alfred H. Terry," requesting officers and trustworthy men to leave by rail on "confidential duty"; dated Atlanta, January 10, "General," signed "Alfred H. Terry," asking Ruger to arm and prepare to move one hundred men because of the excitement in town.
