 John Hall family papers
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJohn Hall (ca.1780-1850) acquired land near Milledgeville, Georgia for his plantation. He married Mary Johns (d. 1855) and their children included James Monroe (ca. 1820-1881), who married Mary Havis (d. 1881); Mary Jane, who married James Shinholster; and Pamelia, who married Levi Ezell. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence, wills and deeds, and accounts of various family members. There are numerous accounts of the settlement of the John Hall estate, of which James M. Hall was executor. Of special interest are the bills of sale for enslaved people, freedmen contracts, and plantation overseer accounts. The accounts show the growth of the plantation, including purchase of enslaved people and supplies and land, operation of a sawmill, sales of cotton, and labor dealings with the Georgia Penitentiary after the Civil War. There is also a Civil War letter from John W. Shinholster on April 23, 1863 from his camp near Port Hudson, Louisiana.
