Collection Description

Historical Note

George Foster Peabody (1852-1938), banker and philanthropist, was born in Columbus, Ga. and died in Warm Springs, Ga. He was the son of George Henry and Elvira Canfield Peabody, and husband of Katrina N. Trask. He made much of his fortune working with Edison Electric in the late 1800's.

Franz Boas (1858-1942), "Father of Modern Anthropology", devoted a significant portion of his career to the study of linguistics, including American Indian languages.

Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was an American author, historian and Unitarian clergyman.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two letters dated November 18, 1907, directed to George Foster Peabody from Edward E. Hale and Frank Boas regarding study of the Cherokee Indian language. A third letter dated November 19, 1907 is from Mr. Peabody's secretary to Chancellor David C. Barrow, University of Georgia, enclosing the two former letters. A photocopy of Hale's biography from an unknown source is included.
