On January 30, 1864, he was appointed Captain of the 5th Massachusetts Regiment, USCT. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of four letters from Francis Lee Higginson to his father: dated St. Simons Island, June 16, 1863, regarding orders to Beaufort and Florida, and a raid along the way; dated Steamer Ben DeFord, Thursday, June 18, 1863, regarding orders to go to "the Camp of the 2nd S. C. and report to Montgomery with a hundred & fifty men"; dated St. Helena, July 7, 1863, regarding Pulaski, "Morris I," and diminishing officers; dated St. Helena, July 8, 1863, regarding the expedition to Darien.
