Collection DescriptionHistorical NotePerry P. Powell was a soldier in the 1st Illinois Light Artillery, Battery G, U.S. Army during the Civil War. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a diary of Perry P. Powell beginning while still at home in Waukegan, Illinois. After enlisting, Powell heads for Camp Butler in Springfield, Illinois. He describes arriving in Memphis, Tennessee, the weather, orders, and rumors of the capture of Richmond and General Lee, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, explosion of the steamer Sultana in the Mississippi River, and the capture of Jefferson Davis.
