Coulter family papers
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteMoses Coulter was first recorded in Georgia in the 1820 Land Lottery, when he drew 250 acres in Walton County. Moses and his wife, Sarah Martin had numerous children. Some of those children are William M. (b. 1812) married, Martha Davis; Levi F. (b. 1820) married Eliza; John Edmund (b. 1822) married Rachel William Mitchell; Irena Amelia (b. 9 February 1824) married James Nichols; Wiley Harrison (b. 2 August 1822) married Martha Teresa Elizabeth Whittington; Elizabeth Susan (b. 10 January 1822) married Francis Marion Cox; Sarah Amanda (b. 1833) married Wiley Jones. These Coulters began populating central Georgia. They migrated through the state in a southwesterly direction throughout the century, leaving a small paper trail in Butts, Monroe, Pike and Taylor Counties respectively. Toward the end of the 19th century the family began to converge along the Chattahoochee River. On the east side of the river in Muscogee County, Georgia and on the west side of the river in the counties of Russell and Lee in Alabama, where many Coulters still live today. He died 2 October 1957 in Milledgeville State Hospital, Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia.
