Collection Description

Historical Note

George Walton (1749-1804) was one of three Georgians to sign the Declaration of Independence. He served lawyer, judge, governor and senator of Georgia.

Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was President of the Confederate States of America.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of five framed historic documents donated by the W. Newton Morris Charitable Foundation of Atlanta, Georgia. The documents are: 1.) Jefferson Davis letter, July 25, 1850; 2.) James Southall agreement with Mr. William Boucher, June 1797; 3.) Land indenture agreement, January 13, 1843; 4.) John Wilson letter (State vs. Mabrey & Evans); 5.) George Walton letter, January 23, 1709.

Letter to Col. [J.] L. Edwards, [----] of pensions, requesting a copy of Mr. Preston's resolution.

	Agreement between James Southall and William Boucher that Boucher will serve as an overseer for one year in exchange for pay, several pounds of meat and bushels of grain, and the use of cows and land on Southall's plantation. Boucher also agrees to plow and harrow and perform other duties on the plantation as necessary.
