Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteLillian Smith (1897-1966) was an author, lecturer, and human rights advocate, born in Jasper County, Florida, and resided in Rabun County, Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a file kept by Michelle Cliff on Lillian Smith, from 1977-1983. The file consists of correspondence from Cliff, Paula Snelling, George Brockway, and Esther Smith; and papers concerning The Winner Names the Age. The collection also includes a copy of the keynote conference speech "Listening to sounds larger than our own heartbeat: a conference on Lillian Smith," presented by Michelle Cliff at Georgetown University, October 7-9, 1994.
