George Abney papers
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteGeorge Abney (1930-2002), a Georgia native, was a professor at the School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. He collected a considerable amount of information about Georgia in his many years. He began his journalism career covering the Athens High School's Trojan team. In 1945, he became a sports-writer for the Athens Banner-Herald. In 1951, he began work for the Associated Press, but he soon volunteered in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After returning back to the States from war, he studied for his Master's degree in journalism and then dedicated his life to teaching. From 1957 to 1993, he served the Grady College as Director of Undergraduate Services and Honors Advisor. He assisted in the creation of the honors program and the Public Relations Student Society of America at the University of Georgia. Mr. Abney was a member of many organizations of advertising and public relations groups, and was active in the Retired Officers' Association after his service in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. An avid sports fan, he followed women's sports at the University of Georgia especially closely. Scope and ContentThis collection contains the personal and professional papers of George Abney. Included are papers from his time at Athens High School, through his schooling at the UGA School of Journalism, his service in the United States Air Force in Korea, Japan, and The United States, and throughout his tenure serving as a professor and advisor at the University of Georgia. Papers include many organizations of advertising and public relations groups, the Retired Officers' Association, and several items regarding women's sports at UGA.
