Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteCharles Berliner attended the master's degree program in Theater Design at Brandeis University, graduating in 1971. Berliner has enjoyed a long and successful career designing scenery and costumes for plays, musicals, film, television, dance theatre and improvisational theatre. He is primarily known for his theatrical designs created for the live performing arts. In addition, Mr. Berliner was the resident scenery and costume designer for the UCLA Dance Department for ten years; costume designer for the New York based Daniel Lewis Dance Repertory Company, and the Los Angeles based Rudy Perez Dance Theatre. He was nominated for an American Theatre Wing Design Costume Design Award in 1996, for his work on "The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD)" New York engagement of "An Italian Straw Hat," for which a costume and its designs are present in this collection. Berliner is one of only a few recipients of a "Design Arts Fellowship for Theatrical Design" from the "National Endowment for the Arts (NEA-1981)." Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a costume, masks, marionettes, and a handful of costume designs by Charles Berliner. The costume (a dress and hat) and designs are for the 1996 National Theatre of the Deaf production of The Italian Straw Hat. The masks and marionettes are from a production of Faust that Berliner helped design at Brandeis University in 1971, and represent the seven deadly sins, as well as Faust and Gretchen. Additionally there is a framed costume design Berliner made for Bill T. Jones for the Bacchae Project.
