Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteAmos D. Smith & Company (formerly A. D. & J. Y. Smith & Co.) were cotton merchants located in Providence, Rhode Island. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of letters written to A. D. & J. Y. Smith (1856-1858), and Amos D. Smith & Co. (1867), mostly from cotton merchants in Columbus and Savannah, Georgia. The letters discuss the cotton market, cotton prices and shipping orders including invoices and receipts. One letter dated November 15, 1867 is written on a printed copy of "Savannah Weekly Review and Prices Current." Companies include Hall & Dexter (later Charles E. & Amory Dexter); Padelford, Fay & Co.
