Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteStephen Alfestus Corker was a Representative from Georgia. For further information, see his Congressional Record. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence of Stephen Corker and Margaret Mytris Palmer Corker, from 1859-1916. Correspondence is mainly from Stephen Corker to his wife, from camps near Georgia Roanoke Island, Fredericksburg, and Winchester; and U.S. Military Prison, Johnson's Island, Ohio. Corker writes about his health, deaths and health of members in his regiment, 400 prisoners sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, rumors of a prisoner exchange, and family concerns. Other correspondence are from Corker while in Washington, DC; and from Margaret to Frank Corker, and other friends and family members. Included is a letter dated Headquarters, August 18, 1863, to Mrs. M. M. Corker, signed "Robert E. Lee," regarding the fate of her husband. The collection also consists of genealogy of Stephen Corker dating back to 1775.
