Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteDr. Erwin James Eldridge (1833-1902) was a surgeon with 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and then Cobb's Legion, serving in Virginia and then in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, during the Civil War. He married Emma Ronaldson. He resided in Flat Pond (Lee County) and then Americus (Sumter County), Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence of Dr. Erwin James Eldridge and his wife, Emma Eldridge, from 1860-1865. Eldridge writes to his wife from Starkville and Philadelphia, telling her of items that he picked up on the Manassas battlefield, long marches, and officers in battle. Correspondence from Emma to Dr. Eldridge (addressed: Care of Howell Cobb, 16th Georgia Regiment, Richmond, Virginia, and Macon, Georgia), regards news of their home from Americus, Georgia, family matters and a tornado that ripped through town sending slaves and livestock flying through the air.
