Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJames McCulloch (1835-1902) was from Columbia, South Carolina. McCulloch attended the Georgia Military Institute in Marietta, Georgia, and served in the 34th Infantry Regiment of the Georgia Volunteers during the Civil War. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a Civil War diary kept by James McCulloch from August 1862-April 1963. McCulloch writes from Jacksboro, Tennessee; Barboursville; Richmond, Lexington, Danville, Harrodsburg, Frankfort, Georgetown, and Bryantsville, Kentucky; Dalton, Georgia; Mobile, Alabama; and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Journal entries regard troop movements, weather, food and water rations, and fighting. McCulloch also writes about encounters with secessionists; his frequent sickness and experience of the Army's medical services; and accidental shootings amongst the Confederates.
