Armenian Bible Leaf
Collection DescriptionScope and ContentThis collection is comprised of one leaf of an Armenian Bible, stated to be from the early 12th Century. Dealer's note: The text of this leaf is from a 5th century translation of the Bible by the Armenian prelate Maschdots Mesrob (circa 354-441) and is in the Haikian alphabet of 38 characters. Of special interest here is the paper, claimed (in an accompanying note) to have been manufactured in the Near East early in the 12th century, more than 150 years before Fabriano began making paper in Italy. While it is conceivable that the dating here is correct, the presence of a watermark (a feature not in common use at that time) suggests that the paper might have ben made later. The watermark, however, is not in Briquet. Administrative InformationPreferred CitationArmenian Bible leaf, ms2983, Hargrett Rare Books and Manuscripts Library. The University of Georgia Libraries.
