Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteRichard M. Rice was born in October 1826 and lived in Elbert County, Georgia. His parents, Richard Rice and Elizabeth White, had four other children and had lived in Elbert County since the 1700s. Richard M. Rice married Mary Elizabeth Harper (b. 1834) in July 1856. She died in 1896, and he died in 1912. He operated an antebellum-era store near Hart and Elbert Counties, Georgia, in the 1850s and 1860s. Rice sold alcohol, mainly brandy and whiskey, which he produced, among many other assorted items, such as corn, bacon, cotton, mutton, shoes, tobacco, coffee, pencils, and nails.
