Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteMoina Michael "conceived of the idea of selling poppies to help care for disabled soldiers and their families. Born in the Walton County community of Good Hope on Aug. 15, 1869, she attended Lucy Cobb Institute and the Georgia State Teachers College--both in Athens--and Columbia University... for the rest of her life Michael was known as the "Poppy Lady." They are: 1) Athens scenes - Moina Michael is at the top, then clockwise: UGA Chapel, Arch, 1850 engraving, old college, double barreled cannon, Lucy Cobb Institute. In the middle is the tree that owns itself. Plate was made by WA Capps, jewelers by Vernon Kilns, USA, 1st ed. and 2) 1850 campus view of the University of Georgia made by Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston, made in England.
