Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteRichard Raymond Chaffin served in Company D, 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II. He completed basic training at Camp Sibert, Alabama, and traveled to England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He was in the D-Day invasion at Utah Red Beach and in action at such places as Cherbourge, France; St. Lo, France; and Hurtgen Forest, Germany. He was honorably discharged in September 1945. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a typed manuscript written by Raymond R. Chaffin in 1993 of his memories of World War II. Chaffin states, "This is written only for my children and grand-children, at their request." Chaffin includes some photocopied pages at the beginning and end that include his discharge papers, a roster of his company, a list of the company's medal recipients, a citation to award of his Silver Star, a list of the company's dead and wounded in action, a map of Europe, and a photograph of Utah Beach after D-Day.
