Carlton Hillyer diaries
Collection DescriptionScope and ContentThe collection consists of diaries of Carlton Hillyer for 1859, 1861-1865, 1892-1895. The 1859 diary was kept by Hillyer while a student at the Union Academy (Washington, D.C.) and while the entries mainly document Hillyer's activities and lessons at school, he also discusses current events including the war in Europe, tensions in Mexico, local news of politics and court trials, and agriculture. The 1861-1865 diary contains writings of Hillyer including essays, poems, and translations of other's works. The 1892-1895 journal contains notes, probably used for newspapers columns, and clippings from the Augusta Chronicle of columns written by Issacher Marx.
