Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteCharles William Kent was born on September 27, 1860, in Kalona, Louisa County, Va. Kent entered the University of Virginia in 1878 and graduated in 1882 with an M.A. After graduation, he and his college friend Lewis Minor Coleman founded the University School in Charleston, S.C., where Kent taught from 1882 to 1884. Then he went to Germany to study English and modern languages at Gottingen, Berlin, and finally Leipzig where he took at Ph.D. in 1887. After a year spent teaching French and German at the University of Virginia, Kent became professor of English and modern languages at the University of Tennessee, where he remained until 1893. That year he accepted the newly established chair at the University of Virginia in the Linden Kent Memorial School of English Literature, named for an older brother. On June 4, 1895, he married Eleanor Miles. Professor Kent remained on the faculty at the University of Virgina until his death on October 15, 1917. Southern Writers / Joseph M. Flora, Amber Vogel, Bryan Albin Giemza. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of one letter dated November 9, 1907, to Mr. J.H.T. McPherson of the University of Georgia, signed by Charles W. Kent of the University of Virginia. In the letter Kent asks McPherson to research the Georgian writer Henry Rootes Jackson. The letterhead cites Kent as the literary editor of the "Library of Southern Literature" where he is included along with other editors such as Joel Chandler Harris and Edwin Anderson Alderman.
