Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteFrench refugees from Santo Domingo, the Dugas family were early immigrants to Washington, Georgia in the 1790s. Mrs. Louis Dugas ran the Boarding School for Select Young Ladies there until 1810. Also from this family is Louis Alexander Dugas (1806-1898), one of the founders of the Medical College of Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of handwritten letters and documents relating to the Dugas family, all in French. These papers describe the history of their emigration from Santo Domingo to the United States around 1800, and their lives in Augusta, Georgia and Maryland. Louis Alexander Dugas (LLB, University of Georgia) founded the Medical College of Georgia in 1832.
