Collection Description

Historical Note

"As of the 2005 season the University of Georgia (UGA) football in eighteen different bowl games (more than any other program in the country), won eleven Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles, and produced two Heisman Trophy winners. Some of the brightest stars in college football history have worn a Bulldogs uniform, including the quarterback Fran Tarkenton, who went on to a professional career in the National Football League (NFL) and induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Heisman Trophy-winning running backs Frank Sinkwich (who won in 1942) and Herschel Walker (who won in 1982). Additionally, Georgia's home field, Sanford Stadium, named for educator Steadman V. Sanford, ranks among college football's most famed venues; games in the stadium are commonly said to be played 'between the hedges,' a reference to the shrubbery that surrounds the playing field."
