Collection DescriptionScope and ContentThe collection consists of the logbook of the Union screw steamer Western World from 1862. Daily entries by Samuel B. Gregory regard the weather, crew activities, food, and ship operations. Gregory writes about blockading activities off Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Frederica, St. Simons, and Doboy Sound, Georgia; numerous encounters with Confederate ships and blockade-runners in the North Santee River (S.C.); and raids on several plantations.
