Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteWilliam H. "Witt" McDowell, member of the Savannah Volunteer Guards (1861), acted as special agent for the Confederate States of America, Ordnance Department. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of travel passes, receipts, and a certificate of election to the Savannah Volunteer Guards of William H. McDowell dated 1861-1864. Also included are orders signed by Captain Richard M. Cuyler authorizing McDowell to procure railroad cars, purchase coal, iron, leather, copper, tin, and carriages with siege guns for Richmond, Virginia.
