Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJohn Hamlin Newton was the president of the Hart County Gold Mining Company in Hart County, Georgia. He resided in Clarke County, Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of an account book of John Hamlin Newton from 1855-1858 and 1867-1868. Entries from 1855-1858 pertain to the Hart County Gold Mining Company and include amounts paid to workers; expense accounts for workers containing their names, items purchased, and prices; and charges for company supplies. Also includes a running tally of the company's total expenses for 1855-1856. Entries for Newton's plantation, Latimer Place, from 1867-1868, primarily consist of laborers' accounts containing the date, their name, items purchased, and price. Additional entries pertain to "plantation expenses chargeable to the hands" and lists of work to be done on the plantation.
