Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteGaines Winningham Walter received his AB degree from the University of Georgia in 1915; his MA in 1916, and did special graduate work in 1917. He later went to Yale University, earning his PhD in 1933. Walter taught at Boys High in Atlanta, eventually becoming Professor of History Emeritus at Georgia State College. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of the college notebooks, research materials, and miscellanous class notes, and term papers of Dr. Gaines Winningham Walter, from his classes at the University of Georgia and Yale. Series 1: College Notebooks is comprised of notebooks with class notes from Psychology, History, French, Economics, German, Georgia History, Ethics, Chemistry, English, Political Science, Greek, and Spanish. Series 2: Maps is comprised mainly of photostats of maps that Walter used as minor aids in the preparation of his doctoral dissertation, The Commerce of Colonial Philadelphia, at Yale University. They are chiefly maps, views, and miscellaneous items concerning Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Philadelphia (particularly street plans and environs), the Carolinas, New England, Virgina, and other regions, with special reference to the local trading area of Philadelphia. Series 3: Clippings contains a book of clippings from the Georgia Alumni Record, and newspaper clippings concerning current events in the 19th century.
