Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteBelle Boone Beard (1898-1984) was a noted centenarian researcher and professor of gerontology. She was born in Boones Mill, Va., graduated from Lynchburg College and then earned a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr. Dr. Beard proposed and attended the first White House Conference on Aging. She taught at Sweet Briar College where she was a professor and the chairman of the Department of Sociology, Vanderbilt University and New Mexico Highlands University where she was a visiting professor, and the University of Georgia where she was a research scholar. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of interviews that Belle Boone Beard conducted with centenarians. Included also are research notes, card files of centenarians, pictures, writings, papers presented at gerentological meetings, and the like.
