Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteWilliam J. Northen (1835-1913) was a long-term important political figure in the affairs of Georgia. Northen was president of the Georgia State Agricultural Society, and governor of Georgia in the early 1890s. Not only did he advocate such reform measures as prohibition and increased educational funding, he also fought stridently against lynching. For more information, see the article William J.
