Abstract: The collection consists of miscellaneous material, including several masonic documents of William L. Mitchell's, several letters of recommendation for William L. Mitchell including ones by Moses Waddel and Henry Jackson, class notebooks and calligraphic exercises of Henry B. Mitchell, sketches, poetry, and a variety of family-related manuscript materials. There are also two small photograph albums of family members (most unidentified) with one containing several carte-de-visites of Confederate military leaders. In addition, there is an unidentified tintype of an African American woman in striking Asian attire.

Collection Description

Historical Note

William L. Mitchell (1805-1882) was a native Georgian and lived most of his life in Athens, Georgia. He married first Sarah C. Neisler and second L. L. Bass. He was a lawyer, member of the state legislature, superintendent of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, 33rd degree Mason, and professor of law at the University of Georgia. He also served as trustee and secretary and treasurer of the university.

Henry Bass Mitchell was born in 1855 and received his A.B. from the University of Georgia at the age of 20. Married to Hattie G. Hart, he became a farmer and landowner, but he was also an exceptionally talented artist and inventor.
