Scope and ContentThe papers relate to John Beard as U.S. Marshal for the District of East Florida from 1843 to 1852. The letters concern mostly land claims and pension requests. Of particular interest are a letter from Beard to George R. Fairbanks, dated February 7, 1847, discussing the sale of land in East Florida, the benefits derived from the sale, and the disorganization of the land sales process and an 1882 letter from Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. J.
