Collection DescriptionHistorical Note"Dan Emmet [sic.] is best remembered today as one of the pioneers of the early Minstel Shows with his compositions "The Blue Tail Fly", "My Old Aunt Sally" and most notably, "Dixie." His own company was instrumental in establishing many of the early minstrel routines and rituals, including the traditional costume of blue, swallow tailcoat, striped calico shirt, and the white pantaloons. Daniel Decatur Emmett was born on October 29, 1815 in Mount Vernon, Ohio...." -- from "Daniel Decatur Emmett," Songwriters Hall of Fame http://songwritershalloffame.org/index.php/exhibits/bio/C196 Scope and ContentThe collection consists of an autograph manuscript copy of Dan Emmett's song "Dixie land," which was written on 22 February 1899 at Conshocton, Ohio. The recto comprises voice and chorus for the minstrel arrangement while the verso lists the lyrics for five stanzas. This copy has words only; there is no musical notation. (21 1/2 X 26 1/2 cm.) Accompanying the sheet is the quill pen used to make the copy. In addition, the collection contains clippings, off-prints, brochures, and photocopies of other materials relating to Emmett and his famous work. There is also an early recording of "Dixie" by Mabel Garrison and the Victor Male Quartet for Victoria Records.
