Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society records
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteGamma Sigma Delta began in 1905 when a professional agricultural fraternity was formed at Ohio State University with the intention of being an honorary society. However, it soon acquired a chapter house and began to assume a role more associated with a social organization. Over the next decade other chapters of this organization were established at various universities who retained the role of a honorary society. In 1916, the Honorary Society of Agriculture was formed at the University of Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter a move was formed to merge the two honorary societies into one. This was accomplished in 1917 and Gamma Sigma Delta became a strictly honorary organization and admitted selected membership from juniors, seniors, graduate students, alumni and faculty. In 1961 the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society was established on the UGA campus and admits members from the disciplines of Agriculture, Forestry, Home Economics and Veterinary Medicine.
