Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteThomas Walter Reed was the registrar of the University of Georgia for 36 years from 1909-1945. He was known for his love for the university, his ability to remember students' names and his passion for sharing the history of the university. Born on Sept. 20, 1870 in Atlanta, Reed entered UGA as a sophomore in Oct. 1885. He graduated with a master of arts degree in 1888 and a bachelor of law degree in 1889. In 1909, he was elected secretary of the Board of Trustees of UGA, and at the same time he became registrar and treasurer of the university. He remained registrar until his retirement in 1945 when he was designated registrar emeritus. Reed died on April 24, 1950. In the issue of The Red & Black following his death, an editor proposed that the men's dormitory be named in his honor. The Board of Regents approved the recommendation in July 1951. Scope and ContentThe records include administrative correspondence and forms and correspondence regarding admission to the University. A small amount of material documents the activities of B. C. Kenney the business manager. Additionally, there are a large number of land deeds for property in Hall, Clarke, Fannin, and Richmond Counties dating from the early 1820s to 1932.
