International Biological Program records
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteThe International Biological Program (IBP) focused on the quantification of material and energy flows through ecosystems. Its multi-institutional projects included data collection, simulation, and analysis activities to track the whole array of ecosystem processes. The largest of the IBP projects were the "Biome" studies: Eastern Deciduous Forest, Grassland, Coniferous Forest, Tundra, Tropical Forest, and Desert. The research was monitored by the Ecosystem Analysis Program in the National Science Foundation. Assistance in planning and direction was provided by the National Academy of Sciences. Scope and ContentThe International Biological Program collection covers the activities of the project from its inception in the mid-1960s through its demise in 1975. These activities are documented in correspondence, reports, proposals, newsletters and other sources regarding each of the six biomes that were studied. The project's ties to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), as well as a number of American universities are well documented. Organization and ArrangementThe collection is arranged into eight series: Biome Meetings, Eastern Deciduous Forest Biome, Grassland Biome, Coniferous Forest Biome, Tundra Biome, Tropical Forest Biome, Desert Biome, and National and International Programs and Records.
