Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteEdward D. Spurgeon served as Dean of the University of Georgia School of Law from 1993 to 1998 and was a faculty member for another five years specializing in law, public policy and aging, taxation of gifts, estates and trusts, and estate planning. Along with his wife Carol, he also established the Spurgeon Fellowship, which provides funding for law students working in summer public interest positions. Spurgeon graduated from Princeton, earned his JD from Stanford, and later obtained his Master of Laws from NYU. While a partner at the Los Angeles based firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky, and Walker, he co-authored Federal Taxation of Trusts, Grantors, and Beneficiaries, a text and supplements remaining in use today. From 1983 to 1990 Spurgeon served as Dean of the University of Utah Law School, and from 2007 to 2010 as the first holder of the Gordon D. Schaber Chair in Health Law and Policy at McGeorge Law School in Sacramento. Spurgeon served as Board President of the National Senior Citizens Law Center and as an advisor to the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging. He also co-founded the Utah Legal Services Senior Lawyer Volunteer Project and was a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (Utah Chapter).
