Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteThe international Phi Delta Theta fraternity was founded by the "Immortal Six" at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The fraternity then initially appeared as the Georgia Alpha Chapter of the University of Georgia in 1871, and it has consistently created some of Georgia's most successful figures such as governors, lawyers, and businessmen. Some of these figures include Governors Vandiver and Busbee and Olympic Committee Chairman and Chairman of Augusta National Billy Payne. Additionally, the fraternity boasts of having some alumni in the Armed Forces, one of which was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Additionally, the Georgia Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta is not only competitve across all aspects of campus life, but is also highly active in their philanthropic activity. Each year the fraternity hosts two major philanthropic events, one of which benefits ALS "Lou Gehrig's" Disease Research. Georgia Alpha was awarded the Harvard Trophy in 2016, which is the highest trophy that any Phi Delta Theta chapter can receive. Scope and ContentThis collection consists of ledgers containing chapter meeting minutes, attendance and fines sheets, guides and manuals of Phi Delta Theta, a senior honor roll book, member informtation, some loose sheets pertianing to fraternity records, and one oversized group photograph. Everything in this collection serves to document the activity of the GA Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta at the University of Georgia from 1891 - 2010.
