 Morrill Act: 150th anniversary resolutions
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteThe Morrill Land Grand Colleges Act was passed into legislation on July 2, 1862 by the 37th U.S. Congress. The act donated 30,000 acres of public lands to each state for each senator or representative the state had in congress. The land was to be used for the creation of "at least one college in every state upon a sure and perpetual foundation, accessible to all, but especially to the sons of toil..." The first state-chartered university in the United States, the University of Georgia, was designated as a land grant institution by the State of Georgia ten years later in 1872. The University of Georgia continues to carry out its land grant mission of providing public service to the people of Georgia. Serving the citizens of Georgia through its 16 schools and colleges and its numerous centers, institutes, public service, and outreach units are just some of the ways that UGA benefits the state. Scope and ContentTwo signed resolutions passed by the Georgia State Senate and House of Representatives in recognition of the 150 anniversary of the Morrill Act and its importance to the citizens of Georgia. The resolutions found in UGA Archives are encased in plastic and are the originals. An extra encased set of the resolutions was given to Public Service and Outreach.
