University of Georgia commencement gonfalons
Collection DescriptionBiographical/historical noteThe gonfalons in this collection were put into use for the University of Georgia's commencement ceremonies. The oldest ones date back to 1985 when they were displayed as part of the University's bicentennial initiatives. A new set of gonfalons were created in 1998 and used until 2016. Each gonfalon represents one of UGA's constituent schools or colleges. They were displayed around the outside edge of the graduation stage in the order, left to right, in which the schools and colleges were established. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of a set of gonfalons that were displayed at University of Georgia's commencement ceremonides from 1985 until 1998 and another set used from 1998 until 2016. There is a banner for each of UGA's schools and colleges plus three additional ones that represent the University's motto of teaching, research and service. Also included is a banner used in President Michael Adams' 1998 investiture.
