Alford family papers
Collection DescriptionBiographical/historical noteCelia Kelley Alford was born in 1902 in Lilburn, Georgia. At the time Lilburn was rural and most people in the area were farmers so the school system didn't tend to prepare children for college. Celia's father was determined that all four of his children would graduate from college and, as a result, she was sent to the Fifth District A and M School in 1919, graduating in 1920. Then she attended the State Normal School, graduating in 1922, and went on to be a teacher. In addition to her teaching, Celia also raised 3 children. Alice Gertrude Alford graduated from the State Normal School as part of the Class of 1911. Scope and ContentThe Alford family papers document both Celia Kelly Alford and Alice Gertrude. Celia Kelly Alford's papers date from the early 1920s and mostly include State Normal School photographs, memory books, and textbooks. The photographs were removed from the photo albums and placed into archival quality sleeves but the memory books were left intact in order to preserve their intrinsic value. Alice Gertrude's material includes a class photograph and an invitation to the 1911 State Normal School commencement ceremony. Organization and ArrangementThe first seven folders belonged to Celia Kelly Alford and folders 8 and 9 were Alice Gertrude Alford's. Box 2 holds Celia's textbooks.
