Collection DescriptionHistorical NotePatricia Thomas published Big Shot: Passion, Politics, and the Struggle for an AIDS Vaccine in 2001. Before Big Shot, Thomas was a writer and editor for various science and health publications, including American Health Consultants, Medical World News, and Harvard Health Letter. Thomas had also received several awards for Big Shot, including a research grant from the Friendship Fund, the Leonard Silk Journalism Fellowship, and the Ralph A. Deterling Award of Distinction. In addition to her research into creating an AIDS vaccine, Thomas participated in a vaccine study in 1997 at the National Institutes of Health, becoming one of the first people to be injected with an experimental DNA vaccine designed to prevent AIDS. Scope and ContentThis collection consists of interviews, notes, and research done by Patricia Thomas to write Big Shot: Passion, Politics, and the Struggle for an AIDS Vaccine. It includes recorded interviews, transcripts, and interview notes with prominent AIDS researchers, along with other newsletters and articles Thomas wrote on the topic. Other materials include newspaper articles, conference handouts, press releases, emails, reports on clinical trials, drafts of Big Shot, and journals documenting the process of writing the book. Other materials include issues of Human Behavior and Medical World News that Thomas wrote for. ALso included are materials from Irwin David Haffner's military service. Organization and ArrangementThis collection is arranged in four series: I. AIDS Research, II. Big Shot, III. Media, IV. Additions. Series III contains two subseries: Subseries I.
