Dorothy (Dot) Padgett Letters
Collection DescriptionBiographical NoteElizabeth (Betty) Talmadge of Jonesboro, GA was the second wife of Herman Talmadge and a former first lady of Georgia. She married then-Governor Talmadge in December 1941. During her husband's time as a U.S. Senator, Mrs. Talmadge was a well-known socialite in Washington, D.C., hosting luncheons for Pat Nixon and Judy Agnew. She frequently played bridge with Ladybird Johnson. In 1977, Senator Talmadge filed for divorce. In 1980, Betty Talmadge played a prominent role in the ethics committee hearings investigating her former husband, revealing evidence that contributed to Herman's censure by the Senate. Mrs. Talmadge wrote two cookbooks: Betty Talmadge's Lovejoy Plantation Cookbook, published in 1983; and How to Cook a Pig and Other Back-to-the-Farm Rrecipes, which she co-wrote with Jan Robitscher and Carolyn Carter. Mrs. Talmadge died in 2005 at the age of 81. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of two letters sent by Betty Talmadge to Dot Padgett.
